Two-thirds of the 7-mile-long Hermit Road, west of Grand Canyon Village, is now closed to traffic, buses and pedestrians for major reconstruction. That closure, from Hopi Point westward, will continue through November 2008, and starting on July 7, the entire Hermit Road will be closed for construction. This $17 million reconstruction project will widen the road, improve the viewpoints and better define the walking trail. “People will be inconvenienced,” said Maureen Oltrogge, Grand Canyon spokeswoman.
Introduction Three valuable resources give the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) the capability to perform full-scale local tests on highway pavements. These resources are located at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) in McLean, Virginia: * The Pavement Isothermal Test System (PITS), which consists of two concrete chambers containing full-scale pavements. These pavements can be subjected to any configuration of controlled stress fixed-position loading in order to simulate a variety of highway load magnitudes and frequencies.

Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.
Real Estate Brokers with the SRES designation help seniors make wise decisions about selling their home, buying rental property, managing the capital gains and estate tax implications of owning real estate, obtaining a reverse mortgage, moving to a senior community and other issues. The designation was introduced in 1997 and is nationally recognized.
Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

Like Mike Christopherson (Readers Forum, Dec. 1), I wondered why the state of Utah was accumulating such a big sum of money when the roads around the state badly need fixing and schoolteachers are underpaid. Earlier this fall, as I was checking out some of my regular Web sites, I came across some ideas worth consideration. Across the nation libraries are in trouble: not enough money; facing a personnel shortage; low pay for library staff because their value is not clearly understood, etc. * Make sure everyone is greeted with a smile and cheerful presence, be it in person or on the phone. * Consider adapting the Wal-Mart concept of a greeter.

Las Cruces hearing aid

November 21st, 2008

In February 2004, the FDA rejected the first petition submitted by Dr. Killion and his wife Gail Gudmundsen, who also has a PhD in audiology. That petition asked the FDA to rescind its requirement for a physician screening or waiver and to permit over-the-counter sale of hearing aids. Instead of a medical screening, the two audiologists had suggested that hearing aid packages list warning signs of a serious medical problem such as bleeding from the ear and chronic dizziness. Dr. Killion has submitted another petition to the FDA. This one asks the agency to create a one size fits most category that would have fewer restrictions. Technology for effective, inexpensive hearing aids already exists. Dr. Killion points to hearing devices for hunters, sold in sporting goods stores, as an example. These devices effectively muffle gun shots while amplifying quiet sounds, such as those made by animals moving through vegetation. He also says that new materials decrease the need for custom-made molds for the ear pieces. Low-cost aids are already being sold in India and other less-regulated markets. As Richard Goode, a professor at Stanford University and the former president of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head Neck Surgeons, said to The Wall Street Journal: If the FDA does not require the public to see a doctor to rule out glaucoma or other disease before getting reading glasses [sold in pharmacies], why does it do so for hearing aids?
Vision and Reading Aids Vision and reading aids are products designed to assist the blind and visually impaired. Auditory and speech output devices, reading machines, scanning/document reading systems, OCR systems, electronic book readers, talking equipment (clocks/watches, calculators, etc.), Braille devices, screen magnifier/enlarger, closed circuit television (CCTV) for magnifying documents, large button phones, speaker phones, large print books, and taped/audio books are all considered vision and reading assistive technology. Hearing and listening products are designed to assist the deaf and hearing impaired. These products include assistive listening devices, hearing aids, infrared/personal amplification systems, audio/FM loop systems, FM amplification systems, TV amplifiers, TV decoders, visual signaling and alerting systems, tactile alerting systems, telephone equipment and accessories, text telephones, TDDs/TTYs devices, and adapted phones.

vending machines

If you think of vending machines simply as dispensers of soft drinks, snack foods, and items such as combs and painkillers, Kent Savage wants you to think again.Savage is president of Cincinnati-based Vertex Technologies, Inc., and he sees vending machines as miniature retail stores for sales and distribution of everything from cameras and blue jeans to tools and manufacturing equipment. The skys the limit, he says.Since that trip, Savages company has been developing vending machines for both the industrial and retail markets. Businesses can benefit from vending machines because they distribute or sell items without sales workers having to be present.
Do vending machines push an unhealthy diet on teens? State courts and consumer theres a link junk food sold from school vending machines, and rising rates of diabetes (buildup of sugar in the bloodstream) and obesity in young people. But soft drink vendors blame those health problems on a lack of exercise and too much time spent parked in front of the TV. Bridget Guzman, 14, of New York City, agrees: People are just trying to take the blame off of themselves.

For most of this century aluminium was mainly used by the construction industry in a supporting role, as the frames for modern windows. All this is changed as younger architects emerged from behind the closed doors where they spent most of the Eighties doing interior design, and started to build new houses and office blocks. Instead of cubes supporting roofs on beams and columns in the traditional method of construction, this younger generation saw the potential for shaping pods, or shells, in the same way that Future Systems did for their NatWest Media Centre at Lords cricket ground. However, not everything has been designed as an egg - or a Teletubby. Allies Morrison put the fun back into functional with their use of fins that extrude from the glass facade of an extension at Goldsmiths College: these make for a dramatic entrance, and one which shelters the computer screens within from too much daylight. Roofs that unfurl like waves are used in very different ways by Chris Wilkinson at the Stratford Regional Station, and by Sir Norman Foster at the bus terminus in Greenwich, while Penoyre and Prasad made a decorative feature of the properties of unadorned aluminium in their timbered visitors centre at Dagenham, contrasting the materials to dramatic effect. As the century draws to a close there has been a lot of speculation about houses of the future. Will they have plasma walls that beam out works of art at the flick of a mouse? Or will they sport straw-baled walls, as sustainable architects would have us believe? “If you want to find out the building material of the future you had better go to the fairground,” says the French architect, Jean Nouvel. His Arab Institute in Paris has an ingenious facade, with light controlled by aluminium screens that operate like camera lenses: a hidden mechanism widens the aperture when the light is dim and narrows it at noon on a sunny day, controlling the intensity of light within. But Future Systems, which won the top award in the 1999 Aluminium Imagination Architectural Awards with a unanimous vote from the judges for their NatWest Media Centre at Lords, was not shy about predictions for aluminium as the building material of the future. It placed a piece of rolled aluminium on a stand at Interbuild in 1997 to make the point. Naturally, in the competitive world of architecture, there are vociferous detractors who point out that aluminium takes much more energy to smelt - producing powerful global warming gases - than steel. However, Friends of the Earth give it the green light because of its recyclable qualities. Aluminium is one metal which is recyclable without diminishing the strength of the product. So if you melt down all those aluminium frames from windows to make another batch in a different shape, they will be just as strong as the originals. And the UK aluminium industry has invested in new technology to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide and per-fluoro carbons (PFCs) in the production of primary aluminium. Aluminium is light but strong and can be cast, rolled and extruded into complex shapes, so it is hardly surprising that, year on year, submissions to the Aluminium Imagination Architectural Awards have grown. This year Paul Finch, the editor of the Architects Journal and a regular judge at the awards, observed that competition entries were the highest standard yet seen. Impressed by the versatility and ingenuity of the contestants, judges chairman Richard Hordern said he was pleased that younger, less well-established teams, as well as the big names, had submitted designs. This year a new award was introduced by Architects Journal for the most innovative use of aluminium in a European building outside the UK by a British practice. The awards were presented at a Gala dinner at the Dorchester Hotel, London, last night. Michael Portillo was the principal guest speaker.
Swedish window and door manufacturer Inwido AB said on Tuesday (26 June) that it has agreed to acquire the aluminium extrusions processing company A-gruppen. A-gruppen has shown fantastic development in recent years and is a good strategic acquisition for Inwido within surface treatment of aluminium. Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. Members will be asked to contribute ideas for a research agenda. The Cancer-Exercise Agenda: Opportunities in Applications Research

GREAT food, cheap wine and an unspoilt landscape make France the most popular destination with Britons for short breaks and longer holidays. JACQUI THAKE takes a trip through the countryside of Limousin. AS we planned the morning hike across the countryside of Limousin our French hostess urged us: “Make sure you wear your baskets.” Confusion turned to hilarity when we realised that baskets in French meant trainers. Anyway, suitably booted for our expedition round the magnificent Lac du Causse in the Couze Valley, we set off in high spirits as the sun had come out at last.
PLEASANTON — From the moment Bill Wheeler told his friends and family that he was serious about getting into the limousine business, few took him for his word. Wheeler was the last person they could picture going into a business that revolved around punctuality. “I had never been on time anywhere in my life,” Wheeler said. “What people didnt understand is that if I were paid to be on time, then thats an entirely different matter.”
Limousine has diverse meanings, from an inhabitant of the region around Limoges, once called Limousin, and which in the 18th century was looked at askance as home to “an old barbarous French, formerly brought into this country out of France”. The OED overlooks the limousine which was a cloak worn by the driver of a cart whose passenger section was shielded from the elements - hence the vehicle itself and all those gaudy, dark- windowed successors which could house nine cows.

No doubt this was a good grab for the Sales Marketing Executives Association of Arkansas, but the timing and the irony are worth noting. The statewide trade group for marketers has landed a speaking engagement featuring University of Arkansas at Fayetteville head football coach Houston Nutt for its 54th Annual Distinguished Sales Marketing Awards to be held March 13 at the Riverfront Wyndham in North Little Rock. Perhaps the Head Hog will give some insight into the hardship of selling and marketing the UA to recruits and donors in such turbulent times.

Spiceworld - The Movie (PG) Forget Arnie, Sly, Demi, Disney or even that Cruise geezer. With Christmas wrapped and their chart-busting Too Much predictably slotted in at No. 1, a very timely debut dose of big- screen Girl Power succeeds the Full Monty as this year-ends British film biggie.
Snobbishness and condescension ooze from every sentence of Mr. Douthats essay, and his one-size-fits-all dismissal of the films screened at the American Film Renaissance festival (the festivals movies were often awful in fascinating ways, but they were awful nonetheless) strikes me as typical liberal shallowness. How could he make such a blanket statement if he had seen the excellent documentary Entertaining Vietnam, a film that has won best-documentary awards in multiple film festivals around the U.S.? And it appears he did not take the time to see our documentary, Silent Victory (which has received positive reviews from audiences liberal and conservative), before painting us with the same negative brush. Not only that, but apparently Mr. Douthat felt he had to make snide remarks about the physical characteristics of festival founders Jim and Ellen Hubbard (bouffant hair, heavyset man with a hangdog air). Of what relevance could his opinion of what they look like be to the content of the films in the festival?

If you wear glasses, you can use them to make a fashion statement, even if you cant afford Calvin Klein or Donna Karan frames. The most important things to keep in mind when choosing spectacles are the shape of your face, and your facial features. Choose a pair that will accentuate your good points, and minimise your bad ones.

business coaching sydney

November 20th, 2008

Just as marketing or finance professionals have many different tools available to meet their objectives, business leaders can also use different creative approaches to educate themselves and their employees. At the Professional Coaches and Mentors Associations seventh annual conference in Long Beach recently, more than 200 business coaches explored topics such as emotional intelligence, tolerance for turbulence, and assuring corporate profitability. Among the participants were coaches with specialties ranging from career development to the merging of cultures during corporate acquisitions. How does coaching work? The logistics organizer for the conference, Phil Gross, a Seal Beach-based coach and evocateur, (coining a word from evoke and provocateur) makes a point of not just giving advice to a client. Rather, he asks a client to tell me your dream and Ill help you manifest it. Most people, says Gross, are stymied by something, but dont know what that is. And whether the client is a Rodeo Drive jeweler or a city official a coachs job is to identify and demystify the obstacle so it will not prove a hindrance.
The Business Coaching Handbook
READERS OF this newspaper will notice that Business andSports appear back-to-back in the same section. It is no accident that they are adjacent. Increasingly, professionals in both occupations believe the way to optimise a teams performance on field or pitch is also the way to run a business. Stephenson organises a series of early morning talks, “Breakfast Briefings”, for PricewaterhouseCoopers and the Irish Independent. Recently, her guest speaker was Warren Gatland, formerly of New Zealands All Blacks and now coach of the Irish national rugby team. “There is now a huge parallel between sport and business,” he says. “I dont see any difference in what I am doing with the thirty people I am involved with in the Irish rugby team and managing a business, which means providing the environment structure, training, support and discipline needed to optimise performance.” Limerick, the venue for Gatlands talk, boasts three rugby football clubs. No surprise, then, that 450 business executives were happy to turn up at a hotel at 8am, fresh and ready to give him their undivided attention over breakfast. He began by recalling how on his first Irish assignment - a four- year tenure as coach to the Galway club, the Galwegians - he found that starting from scratch was better then taking on something partly formed. The Galwegians were, in the national vernacular, in “rag order”, said Gatland. “They were in a desperate state. That first week we were going to a match in Sligo, two hours away on the bus. We set a meeting time of 11.00 and at 11.00 I was there with two other players. At 11.15 we had about eight players. At 11.30 I said thats it, were going. We had 12 players as we drove out the gate, and picked up two others who were late. “From then on, one of the rules that we established was that if they were going to be late for training, or couldnt make the session, they had to ring me beforehand to let me know so I could make arrangements. That was just one of the things, a bit of discipline, that I brought into the team. The fact that those players were late that time was probably more of a help than a hindrance to me.” A term with the Connaught team followed before he was installed as national team coach. One of the things he learned throughout that time, was that if knowing when to put your foot down is one aspect of management, sharing responsibility is another. “When I arrived back here for my last year, I was told by the committee of the club that we now had a selection panel of five. Part of the success of being with a team that had come from nowhere and was now progressing was that people wanted to have a say. After three or four games I said either they go or I go. I didnt have any problem with people being involved, but if they wanted to be a selector in the team they had to attend every training session, every meeting, and every game, and some people werent quite prepared to invest that level of commitment.” Gatland introduced the policy of assigning additional responsibilities to team members on one of the national teams overseas tours, and he believes it has paid dividends. “One of the things we did was to set up committees within the team. Everyone on that tour was in a committee. There was the social committee and the entertainments committee. We had a banker and a laundry committee. I wanted to take the responsibility away from management and get players to say this is the aspect of the tour that I am on, that I am responsible for. ” Gatland also thinks constructive criticism has a role in employee development. But the effective manager will seek as well as offer it. “I ask the players at the end of each season to evaluate me, and the rest of the management team, anonymously. I find that beneficial in two ways. Firstly to get back some of the positive things that we are working towards as a team. Secondly, I am getting back information that will help me develop further as a coach. Its one of the things I ask business people - would you be prepared to ask your staff to evaluate you, and what sort of honest responses would you get back? If they were negative, what would you do about rectifying the problems identified?” Asked for an appraisal of Gatlands talk, executives and their guests seemed impressed and said the it had given them something useful to take back to their businesses. In one case, at least, it seemed that Gatland was preaching to the converted. Tom Kerin, proprietor of Kerin Project Management, has been inviting annual assessments of management from employees for the past 10 years. “The talk reinforced the values that most managers exhibit,” Kerin said. “Its nice to hear someone at that level dealing with individuals, or rather, individualists, which these athletes very much are. Its good to see how he handles them - which I think is very similar to the way managements should handle top performers in business, both in their own organisation and at client level.”

Business Editors/High-Tech Medical Writers Dicom Imaging Systems, Inc. (OTCBB:DCIM) announced today its meeting and trade show schedule for the 2nd Quarter of 2000.
Business Editors Health/Medical Writers BRANCHBURG, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Aug. 16, 2000 LifeCell Corporation (Nasdaq:LIFC) and BioHorizons Implant Systems Inc., a privately held company that develops, manufactures and distributes oral reconstructive devices, today announced an agreement granting BioHorizons the exclusive right for the distribution of AlloDerm(R) to the dental market.
Former editor of the BMJ 1966-75 (b 1915; q St Bartholomews 1939; FRCP, MSc), d 23 September 1998. Martin was born into a family which had had a medical man in every generation since the middle of the 18th century. One ancestor he was proud of was Sir George Baker, president of the Royal College of Physicians and describer of the Derbyshire colic, due to chronic lead poisoning. After house appointments he was commissioned in the Royal Army Medical Corps and served with the Royal West African Frontier Force in Nigeria and India. Initially, Martin had wanted to be a surgeon, and had obtained the primary FRCS, but in Nigeria a colleague persuaded him to study for the MRCP, which he passed at the first attempt. In 1946 he joined the Medical Research Council as a publications officer, remaining until 1950 when he was appointed assistant editor of the BMJ. During the first three years with the MRC he edited the councils annual reports, assisting also in the preparation of Medical Research in War–the MRCs report for 1939-45. When he joined the BMJ it was at once apparent that Martins training in administration at the MRC would be an asset to an office that was rather apt to rely on the inspiration of the moment to the detriment of a more continuous orderliness. He introduced systems to make the previously ill organised knowledge and experience of the staff more readily accessible, and despite occasional symptoms of reluctance to use these arrangements they were generally welcomed. As assistant and later deputy editor Martin organised the publication of several series of refresher courses, ran the Any Questions? section, and was responsible for that section of the journal notorious for its pitfalls, the correspondence. To all these tasks he brought a thorough grasp of detail and an understanding of what the reader requires from the expert. At the beginning of 1966 he succeeded Hugh Clegg as editor and soon showed that he was offering a striking contrast to the previous regime. Clegg had been an autocratic leader and a fluent, stimulating writer. Martin took the role, to use his own words, of committee chairman rather than general of an army. The new policy had the great merit of enabling every member of the staff to make, and to feel that he was making, a more direct contribution to the editing of the journal. Another innovation of benefit to the journal was his encouragement of members of the staff to travel abroad, both to represent the journals interests in foreign countries and, perhaps more to the point, to learn at first hand about their medical practice, personalities, institutions, and politics. As a result the journal gained a broader basis from which to comment on the activities of a profession particularly noted for its international connections.

Retailers Eye Non-Prescription Reading Glasses If you are holding this page at arms length to read it, you should think about getting a pair of glasses. There are over 90 million Americans over the age of 40 suffering from presbyopia. The condition refers to the gradual decline in the ability of your eyes to focus on nearby objects. As the average age of the American population gets older overall, more people will require at least some help from reading glasses.
Richard Edlow, is the need for reading glasses among an aging population.Of people ages 45 and above - a large slice of Baltimoreans, as baby boomers age - 98 percent require reading glasses, Edlow said. And no one is more likely to forget their spectacles while rushing out of the house than someone who needs them only for reading, he added. We run into instances with patients we see, they come in and say, I forget my reading glasses all the time. Its a problem especially when Im in a new restaurant trying to read the menu, Edlow explained. And as a consumer, I see people all the time borrowing somebodys glasses. We thought, wouldnt it be a neat idea to join together with a number of restaurants and provide it for the public?About a month ago Katzen launched its MenuMates program, providing to each restaurant four pairs of reading glasses contained in a wooden recipe box. The glasses represent the four most common lens strengths, and the box includes a chart with different sizes of print to help patrons select the prescription they need.Five restaurants are on board with the program so far - Liberatores Ristorante, with locations throughout the area, Cosmopolitan Bar Grill in Canton, Cafe Troia in Towson, Vaccaros Italian Pastry Shop in Little Italy and the Brass Elephant on North Charles Street. Jack Elsby, co-owner of the Brass Elephant, said his establishment has seen so many squinting diners he has kept glasses on hand to offer them in the past. Were the kind of restaurant - upscale - where the lighting can be dark and ambient and romantic, Elsby said. And our clientele tends to be 35 and above, those who might [need reading glasses]. We have customers asking all the time.Katzen provides the glasses to restaurants free of charge, and will replenish them if guests wander off with them - a habit that quickly depleted the Brass Elephants supply when Elsby purchased the glasses himself. The cost to Katzen is minimal, according to Edlow. Its a nice touch, he said of the program. Its a community service that helps both our patients and others. And, of course, theres the prospect of increased name recognition for Katzen, he acknowledged.MenuMates targets upscale restaurants, the COO added, as those are most likely to have attentive waitstaff who would notice when a guest is struggling with the menu. Katzen hopes to have 25 or 35 participating restaurants within the next six months, and maybe as many as 100 in a year. The program could even expand nationally if it proves popular, Edlow said, or even to other establishments like golf courses. For Elsby and the other restaurateurs, MenuMates gives them another opportunity to enhance their guests dining experience. A quality atmosphere is all about the details, Elsby explained.I think it just gives them bit more comfort, which makes evening go better, he said.
THE saying boys dont make passes at girls who wear glasses is no longer true - just look at the impact of designer spectacles on todays fashion scene.

Wood still good: Wood-finished cabinets are still the style of choice in kitchens across the United States; they represent about 80 percent of all cabinets purchased, according to a 2002 survey conducted by the National Kitchen and Bath Association. Scripps Howard News ServiceCountertops: Few home remodeling projects are more desirable and offer more bang for your buck than new kitchen countertops. According to a National Kitchen and Bath Association survey, about 94 million linear feet of countertops were installed in homes in 2002. Sixty-two percent of that was used for kitchen remodels. The amount spent on countertops ranks just below cabinets.
Have you ever thought of your kitchen as a laboratory? Whenever you make something in your kitchen, you are using science. Cooks, like scientists, combine and change materials to create something new. Everything in the world is made of chemicals. When chemicals are mixed together, interesting things can happen. In laboratories, scientists mix and experiment with chemicals. In kitchens, cooks mix chemicals also, but call them ingredients. A scientist in a laboratory follows an experiment. A cook in a kitchen follows a recipe. Both need to follow directions and measure carefully. They both use special equipment. A scientist may use test tubes and a cook may use bake pans. For both of them, temperature and timing are very important.

Savvy employers are constantly looking for ways to enhance the work environment while cutting costs. Caterpillar Inc., Peoria, IL, now offers such service to heavy equipment operations. For their model 905, 966 and 980 front end loaders, they have started using the Baydur STR/F651 reinforced structural foam polyurethane RIM system to form HVAC enclosures. Tipping the scales at 9 lbs, the HVAC enclosure consists of two separately-molded pieces that are 19-in, deep by 24-in, long. Wall thickness is a consistent 1/2-in., with the exception of a slightly thicker area where the lunch tray is bolted on. Both front and back pieces are molded by PLA-MA USA, Owosso, MI. For the front piece, the company first sprays the mold with a release agent, then places the vinyl exterior skin into the mold and clamps it into place. After a vacuum pulls the vinyl into the mold cavity, an operator hand-tucks the vinyl into the molds recess. Next, a pre-cut fiberglass mat is laid over the vinyl and secured. The Polyurethane is injected and the mold is closed for 10 minutes. Both pieces are water-trimmed, bonded together with adhesive and then sent to Caterpillar where accessories are installed.
The Capital Goods industry has three sub industries: electrical equipment, heavy equipment and machinery manufacturers. The three capital goods market segments have similar valuations even though their end products are different Another factor effecting the valuation of heavy equipment and capital goods companies is interest cost The current rate of interest is favorable for this group. Also, long term interest rates are relativly low which makes it easier for corporations and farmers to finance heavy equipment expenditures. Companies, in the heavy equipment industry, that obtain a significant amount of their sales in foreign markets usually have a higher growth rate and therefore a higher valuation. The reason is, there is a worldwide built up demand for infrastructure improvements. Therefore companies doing business in the international market have a good source for long term profits.

WHATS NEW AT SARS? The current Bill envisages a new body to govern tax practitioners.
WHATS NEW AT SARS? Section 67A, which was introduced into the Income Tax Act in 2004, requires all natural persons that provide advice or assist with the completion of tax returns, apart from certain exclusions, to register with SARS by 30 June 2005. The draft Regulation of Tax Practitioners Bill has been published on the SARS website.
2005 TAX RETURNS SARS has recently conducted a number of workshops around the country to address the completion of the 2005 tax returns. Some of the important issues to be considered when completing and submitting these returns are as follows: Taxpayers who have not received their tax returns by the end of May 2005 must request a reissue as SARS will not accept photocopied returns. Until 8 July 2005, taxpayers may obtain reissues of any tax returns over the counter at any SARS office.

Cars. Dir. John Lasseter. Released by Disney-Pixar. Featuring the voices of Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt, and Larry the Cable Guy. 116 min. Video release: Nov. 2006. This film is visually entrancing (the sequences set at the track are sufficiently stimulating, chaotic and noisy with furious angle cuts to engage your basic attention-deficient kid) and often slyly comic (because there are only cars in this world, tractors do the work of farm animals and one popular prank is tipping over tractors) and generously garnished with characters that can be personable (the wonderfully naive beat-up pick up voiced by Larry the Cable Guy is as endearing and appealing as any Disney character since Thumper). But it lectures, often heavy handedly, about a lost America, dated here to the mid-1950s, a world of caring neighbors, a slow down, small-town world of simple pleasures like a slow drive in the country, where love was expressed in batted eyes and stammering speech. Granted that 1950s is a confection of Hollywood and perhaps it is an exercise in pointless nostalgia to mourn something that never really existed, it works here. When Lightning McQueen, the showboat hot-shot race car (Owen Wilson), loses a big race (his daredevil antics on the track cost him the victory) and decides brashly to eschew his racing team to head alone to the season-ending showdown race for the Piston Cup, he gets lost on a stretch of back highway, the mythic Route 66, in the deserts somewhere on the way to California. He ends up in a lonesome town, Radiator Springs, itself a cross of intersections bypassed long ago by the interstate and now settling into dust. When Lightning ends up impounded in the town and then sentenced by an unforgiving old-timer judge (Paul Newman) to community service–he must repave the stretch of broken-down highway his race car has damaged–the young kid comes to understand, slowly, the simple values that his media-driven celebrity lifestyle and virtually impenetrable narcissism have never shown him: friendship, trust, honesty. Happily, the judge turns out to be himself a relic of past racing glory and with his help and his patient (although wonderfully gruff) instruction the kid learns a thing or two about handling cars. When Lightning returns to race, he does so richly educated in the importance of tradition, the value of modesty, and the sterling quality of friendship. I would not dream of spoiling the end of the film, but in the end we learn, as with all truly significant sports films, what happens in competition pales next to the significance of what happens off field. With Lightnings newfound sensitivity, the town finds its way to a renaissance that is as believable as it is heartwarming.

Kitchen. By Yoshimoto Banana. Translated from the Japanese by Megan Backus. New York: Grove Press, 1993. 152 Pages. Kitchen, a short novel, is paired in the same titled book, with a novella of Bananas, Moonlight Shadow. Kitchen chronicles a contemporary young womans journey through the grief and healing process. Banana uses this main character as a vehicle for the reader to view the social change occurring in contemporary Japan. The first person account by the main character, Mikage, describes the loss she feels not only for all the members of her immediate family, but also the larger nuclear family of past generations. The story begins with the death of Mikages grandmother, the last surviving member of her family. Her grandparents raised Mikage, after both of her parents were killed when she was very young, and in her teenage years, her grandfather has also died. As part of her grief process, Mikage is adopted by a very complex and contemporary family, Yuichi, a young man who had befriended Mikages grandmother and Eriko, his transsexual mother. While living with this family, Mikage learns the meaning of joy, finds comfort in belonging to a family, and develops a satisfying career in cuisine. However, her grief and healing process become complicated when Eriko dies and Yuichi succumbs to depression over his mothers death. Because of Erikos and Yuichis generosity and compassion, Mikage is able to reach Yuichi, and in the process, learns a life lesson, finding the necessary balance between suffering and pleasure.

Much attention in the progress towards Creative Scotland (which will require further legislation) focuses on the person in the chair of the coterminous board, Dr Richard Holloway, who has been chair of the Scottish Arts Council since 2005 and is an author, broadcaster and the retired Bishop of Edinburgh in the Scottish Episcopalian Church (in which he was a conspicuous liberal on issues of sexuality, drugs and bioethics). Dr Holloway (born 1932) is an interesting figure, immensely experienced in the ways of institutions and not, by instinct, the rubber stamp for anyones agenda. It will be interesting to see how he fares with the coterminous boards balance of art and industry, and how much influence he may exert on the way the debates around subsidy, instrumentalisation, training and the positive, independent role of culture are being shaped in the run-up to what nobody wants to call a merger.

A pretty poor World Cup, apart from one half against Australia, has left Scotlands reputation damaged but with new coach Matt Williams on board, there is at least a fresh feel around Murrayfield. Current form: Not great. A win over Italy before the World Cup was followed by defeats to Wales and Ireland. Then narrow wins over Japan and Fiji got Scotland through the group stage but there was a record defeat to France before the inevitable exit at the hands of Australia. Weaknesses: The centres are not the strongest and there is no proven scorer out wide, although Simon Danielli looked impressive in the RWC match against the US.

UN passes declaration favoring human cloning banThe United Nations recently passed a declaration opposing all forms of human cloning as “incompatible with human dignity.” This declaration was supported by the United States and led by Costa Rica. The declaration passed in the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Sixth Committee by a vote of 84 in favor, 34 against, and 37 abstaining. The declaration does not have the force of international law, though it does make a strong international statement against all forms of human cloning, including research cloning.

The Methodist church has set up a company to manage an ethically correct portfolio. It joins the Co-operative Bank and a small, but growing number of organisations that believe they can influence the way corporate Britain behaves by withholding their money from companies involved in alcohol, tobacco, armaments, gambling and pornography. They call it “ethical” investing. Say you are buying stock in Hanson, one of the biggest cigarette manufacturers in the country (it owns what used to be called Imperial Tobacco, maker of Players and Embassy). Its stock market value is about pounds 10bn. To have any significant effect on the company, you would have to pick up at least half a per cent of the company - that would cost you pounds 50m. The Methodists may well have access to funds on this scale. Presumably, they wont be buying Hanson shares. But would it not be making a stronger ethical statement if it did buy a slug of Hanson and started fighting from within? The Methodists would be one of the dozen biggest shareholders, and Hanson, famous for working “in its shareholders interests”, would have to sit up and listen to them rather than dismissing them as a bunch of ignorant do-gooders.
There is no greater competition between investment practitioners than that between those who favour growth shares and those who engage in so-called “value” investing. The former say that the key to making money consistently is buying shares that are experiencing rapid growth in earnings. The latter say that a much better approach is to look for those that are selling at such a low price - relative to earnings, asset value or cash flow - that the only way they can go is up. Graham was a classical scholar who liked nothing better than reading the small print in balance sheets. He was the first man to turn stock market research into a reputable activity, and in a series of books and monographs laid down a series of guidelines for value-based investing which are still required reading for serious students. His book, Security Analysis, remains the standard textbook for professional analysts and fund managers. Growth stock investors, by contrast, pay homage to a different pantheon of heroes. Perhaps the first to establish a lasting reputation for his methods was another American, T Rowe Price. His name still adorns a number of mutual funds in the United States. In more recent times, and in this country, Jim Slater is one well-known investor who has popularised his own version of growth stock theory.
